Who Is Mildred?Mar 23, 2019
What’s in a name? A lot!
Contrary to popular belief, Mildred is not the owner or chef of Mildred’s Temple Kitchen (…that would be Donna). But Mildred is no doubt the heart and soul behind the restaurant.
The name of the restaurant is based on the 1945 film Mildred Pierce. A film noir crime drama that has great characters and lots of twists and turns. The story is about a woman named Mildred who opens a restaurant and experiences various ups and downs along the way. Fun fact: The lead, Joan Crawford, won an Oscar for Best Actress in 1946 for her role as Mildred. If you haven’t already, it is a must see!
Once you watch the film Mildred Pierce, take another look at our menus. You will start to see various mentions to characters from the film…
Back in March of 1989, Mildred Pierce was the first of the two restaurants to open and it was Donna Dooher and Kevin Gallagher who led the charge. Located at 99 Sudbury Street in the Queen West neighbourhood, Mildred Pierce became a staple to the community for almost 20 years. It was the spot for dining, sipping, brunching and celebrating. Mildred Pierce finally closed its doors in 2007.
In 2008, Mildred jumped to the other side of the tracks and opened a new restaurant in the heart of Liberty Village. It is here that Mildred’s Temple Kitchen has grown with the community over the past ten years providing the best in brunching and b’lunching to her loyal guests.
